About

MUCKRACH

Muckrach extends to 8,000 acres of mixed landscape; moorland, agricultural land and 250 acres of existing woodland. The estate has been managed relatively traditionally with farming, forestry and residential property as its three core enterprises.

As appreciation for Scotland’s natural assets grows, Muckrach wants to recognise the importance of responsible management of the natural environment as part of its objectives.

Muckrach Forest will be an environmental enhancement project central to a wider strategy to become a progressive and sustainable land management business, whilst continuing its other enterprises.

MISSION STATEMENT

Our vision

We aim to create a landscape-scale native woodland in keeping with its surroundings.

Our goal

Our goal is to create a woodland to sequester carbon from the atmosphere and provide valuable habitat for wildlife through the creation of woodland and through connected open spaces. We hope that Muckrach Forest would become a place for both wildlife and communities to enjoy.

The naturalistic mixture of native Scots pine and broadleaves will best suit the different site conditions. The design balances maximising woodland cover and carbon sequestration, with the desire for a structurally diverse, ecologically functioning woodland sitting amongst well connected areas of open space.

The moorland at Muckrach has been a working landscape for centuries. Evidence of the communities who lived and worked there are evident in the number of archaeological remains we have identified across the site. We will not carry out any planting on or near these sites in order to preserve them, and care has been taken to design these excluded areas sensitively within the landscape.
